Whale and Dolphin Watching
A few miles off the jungled coast of Mirissa reside some of the sea's most elusive creatures. Blue whales, sperm whales, orcas and spinner dolphins traverse these waters between October and April.

Of seven turtle species, five live in Asian waters and they all come to nest at Rekawa beach. Join the Turtle Conservation Project's "turtle watch" which oversees nesting and safe sea-return of hatchlings.

Yala and Udawalawe National Parks
Just south of the Central Highlands lie Yala and Udawalawe national parks. Yala is the island’s biggest park and has the highest density of leopards in the world. These predators live among sloth bear, Sāmbhar, spotted deer, ant-eater, and civet cats. Udawalawe is famed for its herd of over 500 elephants, who roam the park’s grasslands.

Kataragama Temple
Along with Adam’s Peak, Kataragama is the most important religious pilgrimage site in Sri Lanka and is a holy place for all religious denominations. In July and August, the Kataragama festival draws thousands of devotees who make the pilgrimage over a two-week period.

Galle Fort
Originally built by the Portuguese and later fortified by the Dutch, Galle Fort is a UNESCO world heritage site that contains some of Sri Lanka's most arresting architecture. Spice markets, boutiques and historical landmarks abound in this cultural melting pot.

Surfing, Scuba, Snorkelling
The numerous surf breaks along the South Coast are among the best in the region, with spots nearby to suit all abilities. For beginners, an instructor can be arranged in Hiriketiya.
The closest PADI-qualified dive school is in Dickwella. Diving lessons and snorkeling excursions are available to explore local bays and reefs.

Tangalle Fish and Food Market
One can find the core components of Sri Lankan cuisine in the food markets at Tangalle. Fresh local produce line the streets: fragrant aromatics, redolent chilies and the local fishermen's catch.
